A República de Malta é um pequeno país europeu, composto por um arquipélago de cinco ilhas muito próximas, situadas a 93 km ao sul da ilha da Sicília, a sudoeste da Itália, e a 290 km ao norte da Líbia, na África. O arquipélago maltês está encravado no centro do Mediterrâneo. As terras mais próximas são todas sicilianas / italianas: a grande ilha da Sicília a norte, as ilhas Pelágias a oeste e a ilha de Pantelleria a noroeste. Sua capital - situada na ilha de Malta - é La Valetta. As cinco ilhas do arquipélago maltês são: Malta, Gozo, Comino e duas ilhotas desabitadas Cominotto e Filfla, as quais, no total, têm superfície de 316 km² e abrigam uma população estimada em 400 214 habitantes (agosto 2006).
